Jacko Sampled Again

Beatfreakz aka Hi Tack Aka (i just discovered) Klubbheads release another killer electro disco track. They've sampled Jacko 's vocal from 1984's Rockwell, ‘Somebody’s Watching Me’ this time and it lends itself to more of a pop dance track similar in vein to every single track thats around at the moment im afraid. Does this mean it doesnt work? Hell no, this track will be tearing up discos and bars all summer long. Released on, yep you guessed it, MOS's Data label you can bet your house on it going top 20.

So why does it work? (im refering to the original Hi Tack mixes here)

Well you've got:

  • a looped up sample, check.
  • A catchy vocal from a well known source, check.
  • Catchy drum beats, check.
  • Remixes from some UG sources as well as the most popular remixers of the moment, check.
  • A paedophilic star in the video, nope.

So how can it fail but to be big. Think of the lowest common denominator on the dancefloor, that gorilla with his shirt off with England tattoos and the lobster tan, this track is going to push all his drunken buttons and get him flailing his arms around all day long.

The other remixes come from Ian Carey and Dennis Christopher.

The Ian Carey remix starts with some tougher drums, before heading into a darker filtered vocal. He's thrown away the sunshine mix here and opted to get down and dirty. There is an electronic pulsing bassline running through this version of the track, this one will get the more clued up 4am clubbers to find a bit more energy to give it one last dance before they head off home. It makes minimal use of the vocal and come off well as a result.

The Dennis Christoper mix is a tougher bouncier affair from the word go. Its a peak time anthem mix with filters and studio effects thrown in. It takes the sample and cuts it up adding a stuttering effect before unleashing an electro masterclass on the dancefloor. This one isnt for the Hi Tack crowd, this one is for me and you. Its breakdown strips all away with just the opening bar looping, before bringing back in the drums and letting the tension build. Teasing the vocal in, "Who's..", "Who's"...it goes on, with an electro wave building before crashing back in. It sounds crap on your stereo and can only be appreciated in a club, but its definitely the best mix on the cd.

so whats my opinion:
Hi-Tack Mixes: Future cheesy Tunes
Ian Carey Mix: Top Bar
Dennis Christoper: DJ DNA's Record Bag
